The Thunder Mountain and Big Creek Consolidated Mining and Transportation Company owned mines on Thunder Mountain near the former mining boomtown of Roosevelt, Idaho, in Valley County. Roosevelt lies on Monumental Creek, which flows into Big Creek, which flows into the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. Thunder Mountain was Idaho’s final gold rush in the early 1900s, largely due to its remote, isolated location in the Salmon Mountains east of McCall, Idaho at an elevation of over 8,000 feet. Transportation of ore to mills and heavy machinery to mines and mills was a major undertaking, with poor roads, steep mountain valleys with frequent rock slides and avalanches. By 1906, Thunder Mountain and Big Creek Consolidated built a light ten-stamp mill near Roosevelt. The distance from the mines to the nearest railroad was reported to be 180 miles.
