The Telma Gold Mining Company owned mines about ten miles north of Salida, Colorado in Chafee County. Mines were on a patented lode claim of about 85 acres just east of Smeltertown in the mountains east of the Arkansas River (within what is today the San Isabel National Forest). Smeltertown was a small boomtown in the early 1900s with thousands of people working in the ore smelting industry. The Ohio-Colorado Smelting and Refining Company operated the large smelter from 1902 until 1920.
This stock certificate is issued to Lynn S. Atkinson, one of the sons of George W. Atkinson (1836 – 1905), who was a prominent stone mason in Colorado. Lynn, along with his brothers Walter and Guy, were heavily invested in the construction industry in Colorado and southern California. The Atkinson family founded the Atkinson Construction Company in 1920, specializing in dam projects and other infrastructure projects in the West. Lynn S. Atkinson was responsible for construction of numerous public buildings in Colorado Springs and the Los Angels area, and later, dams and public works. Lynn S. Atkinson, Jr., son of Lynn Atkinson, would later become president of the Atkinson Construction Company, based in Los Angeles.
