RM Sotheby’s - NEW YORK NOVEMBER 16, 2017LOT 55 -
2001 FERRARI F2001 FORMULA 1 RACING CAR - SOLD FOR ,504,000.00
Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Auction in New York this November was an outstanding success, with 96% of works sold and the vast majority of works appearing at auction for the first time. Leading the 0.2 million sale was Francis Bacon’s rare triptych Three Studies of George Dyer, which achieved .6 million. Roy Lichtenstein’s Female Head from 1977 was another highlight of the sale, garnering serious interest from five bidders and ultimately selling for .5 million. An impeccable grouping of works on paper from the collection of Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel and Ambassador Carl Spielvogel captivated bidders, with all works in the Contemporary Art Evening Auction sold. The sale was also characterized by our largest and strongest ever group of works by female artists, with records for Laura Owens and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, as well as strong results for Marlene Dumas and Louise Bourgeois. For the first time, Sotheby’s offered in our Contemporary Art Evening Auction a Formula One Ferrari, driven by racing legend Michael Schumacher, which broke the auction record for a modern era Formula One car. With a 12% increase since November 2016, Sotheby’s Contemporary Art department is delighted with this season’s results.
