The Pennsylvania Anthracite Coal Company was formed in the 1870s to operate coal mines in northeastern Pennsylvania. The eastern and northeastern Pennsylvania anthracite coal fields are located in the counties of Lackawanna, Luzerne, Columbia, Carbon, Schuylkill, and Northumberland. Coal mining in northeastern Pennsylvania dates back to the late 1700s and has been an important part of the economy in this region ever since then. The coal mining industry was the catalyst for mass immigration to this eastern Pennsylvania region in the 19th and 20th centuries.
