The Iron Hill Consolidated Mining Company mines were located in Leadville, Colorado on Breece Hill in the Leadville Mining District (Lake County). The ores that were mined produced primarily silver with secondary gold, lead, and zinc. The Iron Hill Consolidated Mining Company was owned by John Francis Campion (see bio below), who in the 1880s – 1890s amassed a fortune with mining operations within Colorado’s Leadville and Breckenridge mining districts.
John Francis Campion (1849 – 1916), also known as “Leadville Johnny”, was the principal owner of some of the richest gold and silver mines in the Leadville and Breckenridge areas, including the Ibex mine complex (better known to include the Little Jonny Mine), Bison, Reindeer, Elk, and Wapiti mines. One of Campion’s partnerships was with James Joseph (JJ) Brown, who operated Campion’s Little Jonny Mine, one of the richest gold, copper and silver mines in Leadville. In gratitude to Brown, he was awarded a 1/8th interest in the mine, which was destined to establish the fortune for JJ and his wife Margaret or “Molly”. His wife was best known as the “Unsinkable Molly Brown” for her heroism during the sinking of the ill-fated British passenger-liner R.M.S. Titanic in 1912. By 1893, large amounts of gold ore had been found in the Little Jonny and the Ibex Mining Company aggressively secured many additional claims on the Breece Hill area of Leadville.
