    Description

Authentic Hamilton US Navy Shipping Container for Ship Chronometer Model 21
Developed for the Hamilton Model 21 but can be used for any standard size chronometer (Elgin, Mercer, Ulysse Nardin, etc.).
This was developed by the Hamilton Watch Company at the direction of the US Naval Observatory during WWII for the protection of US Navy ships chronometers being shipped back and forth for service and repair.
The container is designed to reduce exposure to moisture and dust while at same time providing shock resistance and an armoured exterior for a marine chronometer while being shipped.  These containers were in turn surrounded by padding with a cardboard box that had a large sticker reading "Handle with Care, Delicate Instrument".  The container was sunk into shredded paper for additional padding.
The lid is very tight fitting to keep moisture out.
First 3 pictures are of actual aluminum container as found after many years of serviceuse.  The last picture is of another one from my collection after I cleaned it up and shows what these look like cleaned and polished.
A partial sticker on side of container added during Korean War era shows how to pack chronometer within.
This shipping container can still be used for safe transport of ships chonometer, as an interesting display or to house a chronometer lacking wooden box.
Good investment in protecting your chronometer and enhancing its resale value!
It weighs over 2 pounds and will be shipped with USPS Priority Mail to you.
