Beautiful 1903 SWEDISH-AMERICAN Tiger Oak Picture Frame Front Wall Phone Turn the magneto crank and the nickel bells ring This is a beautiful 1903 tiger oak Swedish American wall phone. This phone has a cathedral top back board and picture frame routing around the transmitter on the front. Swedish American was known for their high quality craftsmanship and using beautiful tiger oak when manufacturing their telephones. The phone still has the original manufacturer decals. Above the transmitter arm the decal is the Swedish American logo, which is two Swedish lions holding an American shield with a blue background and white stars on top and red and white strips on the bottom. Below the transmitter are is a rare decal with a green background which says: HERCULES Hercules, is the model name of this phone. The magneto is a five bar style and there is a nickel cover over each magnet with a large S over A which is a Swedish American logo. When the magneto is cranked the nickel bells ring loudly. The nickel switch assembly is stamped in the casting: SWEDISH-AMERICAN TEL. Co. CHICAGO The ringer is covered in green silk insulation. The nickel clapper is marked: SWEDISH-AMERICAN TEL CO. PAT. JULY 7, 1903 The phone is in great shape no cracks or chips in the wood. The phone has an old rich varnish patina only found on early wooden wall telephones. The phone has a 5 bar magneto covered in a nickel cover which has a large S/A, when the crank is turned the nickel bells ring loudly. The receiver extremely rare, it is the bi-polar magnet style. The receiver cap is marked: SWEDISH-AMERICAN TELEPHONE CO. CHICAGO U.S.A. What is very unusual is the bee hive shaped cone in the center of the cap opening. I think it was added to attach a hearing horn to the receiver for the hard of hearing. All the internal parts of the receiver are original. The transmitter is marked: SWEDISH-AMERICAN TELEPHONE Co. 183317 CHICAGO The transmitter arm and mount are heavy cast. The fancy cathedral top is where the telephone line connects and where the lighting arrestor is mounted. The bells are the 2 ½” nickel bells. There is a capacitor mounted in the battery compartment which is labeled: CONDENSER NO. 3 CAPACITY ½ M. F. TESTED AUG 12, 1906 SWEDISH-AMERICAN TELEPHONE CO CHICAGO All the original wiring is in place and shows the detail and craftsmanship employed by the Swedish American company.
